Exodus 3:1-14<\/strong>
Moses at the burning bush
3 Moses was taking care of the flock for his father-in-law Jethro, Midian\u2019s priest. He led his flock out to the edge of the desert, and he came to God\u2019s mountain called Horeb. 2 The Lord\u2019s messenger appeared to him in a flame of fire in the middle of a bush. Moses saw that the bush was in flames, but it didn\u2019t burn up. 3 Then Moses said to himself, Let me check out this amazing sight and find out why the bush isn\u2019t burning up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 When the Lord saw that he was coming to look, God called to him out of the bush, \u201cMoses, Moses!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moses said, \u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Then the Lord said, \u201cDon\u2019t come any closer! Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground.\u201d 6 He continued, \u201cI am the God of your father, Abraham\u2019s God, Isaac\u2019s God, and Jacob\u2019s God.\u201d Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 Then the Lord said, \u201cI\u2019ve clearly seen my people oppressed in Egypt. I\u2019ve heard their cry of injustice because of their slave masters. I know about their pain. 8 I\u2019ve come down to rescue them from the Egyptians in order to take them out of that land and bring them to a good and broad land, a land that\u2019s full of milk and honey, a place where the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites all live. 9 Now the Israelites\u2019 cries of injustice have reached me. I\u2019ve seen just how much the Egyptians have oppressed them. 10 So get going. I\u2019m sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 But Moses said to God, \u201cWho am I to go to Pharaoh and to bring the Israelites out of Egypt?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 God said, \u201cI\u2019ll be with you. And this will show you that I\u2019m the one who sent you. After you bring the people out of Egypt, you will come back here and worship God on this mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God\u2019s special name
13 But Moses said to God, \u201cIf I now come to the Israelites and say to them, \u2018The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,\u2019 they are going to ask me, \u2018What\u2019s this God\u2019s name?\u2019 What am I supposed to say to them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14 God said to Moses, \u201cI Am Who I Am. So say to the Israelites, \u2018I Am has sent me to you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exodus 4:1-5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Moses replied, \u201cBut what if they don\u2019t believe me or pay attention to me? They might say to me, \u2018The Lord didn\u2019t appear to you!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 The Lord said to him, \u201cWhat\u2019s that in your hand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moses replied, \u201cA shepherd\u2019s rod.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 The Lord said, \u201cThrow it down on the ground.\u201d So Moses threw it on the ground, and it turned into a snake. Moses jumped back from it. 4 Then the Lord said to Moses, \u201cReach out and grab the snake by the tail.\u201d So Moses reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a rod in his hand. 5 \u201cDo this so that they will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors, Abraham\u2019s God, Isaac\u2019s God, and Jacob\u2019s God has in fact appeared to you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
